Youth Week success depends on support from youth

YOUTH Week is on with a vengeance in 2018 and the cry from community leaders and council is for local youth to get out and support it.

A jam-packed calendar of events includes live music, pottery or juggling workshops and even tips from a professional cartoonist.

Headspace manager Travis Maguire said it was a great opportunity for the young people of the region to get engaged and involved.

"There's a heaps on and some really cool events to head along to," he said.

"The music events planned look fantastic, but they were a little too last minute for headspace to get involved.

"We've got our huge open day here on Saturday, and we'd welcome everyone along to come along and check out the centre.

A few weeks after it appeared Southern Downs Regional Council had washed its hands of the week-long event calendar, the council came out last week spruiking a series of concerts, Park Beats, it had organised with Stanthorpe business Soular Music Services.

Councillor Neil Meiklejohn said the council had never been involved in running events for Youth Week.

"Nothing has really changed in that regard," he said.

"We've always taken a co-ordination role, with our youth team bringing everything together and marketing the events.

"I hope the community gets out and supports all the events over the week."
