Youth to shine bright at festival

MULLUM Music Festival is giving talented youth the opportunity to shine.

Aspiring musicians across Australia have the opportunity to launch their careers through the Mullum Music Festival's youth mentorship program, which pairs youth with local bands, singers and songwriters.

At the music festival where beard meets banjo, flannelette meets fiddle, and bluegrass meets a rocking call of emerging and established talent, youth have the opportunity of rubbing shoulders with their heroes backstage while wowing audiences on it.

Festival general manager Nin Haggith said the program had been strongly received and, now in its sixth year, was a unique opportunity for young musicians.

"In the past we have varied genres which generally bend to fit one of the four categories and we try to squeeze all applications into the four categories and just let the judging panel take it from there,” Haggith said.

"In the past, we've been getting applications from all over the country. It's been a very successful program and one we're very proud of.”

Haggith said there was a spot for anything unique in the vocal, band, singer songwriter and under-15 categories, with category winners to receive a performing slot at the festival as well as mentorship from an established artist.

Nominations are submitted through a package including a live video, high resolution images and a biography.

For a third year, Mullumbimby High School will fund and hold live auditions on September 23, where students are judged by industry professionals.

Haggith said the program wanted to hear about what each artists had achieved and what they wanted to do with their music in the future.

The three-day festival kicks-off on November 17, with winners announced on February 4.
