YOUR SAY: Hangings don't stop drug dealers in Singapore

YOUR SAY: Regarding Dave Fredericks' letter of May 19: Singaporeans do not sit back and say "you won't find drug dealers on the streets of Singapore" because of hanging people.

They do a lot more with their Central Narcotics Bureau spending heavily on school education programs. Doctors are required to report patients they suspect are drug users (would we allow this?). They also liaise with the likes of the Australian Federal Police.

Suggesting in the Straits Times that you would shoot a drug dealer in your own home would place you on a watch list.

Singapore changed its legislation in 2012 to allow judges freedom to apply life sentences in lieu of mandatory death sentences.

If Dave Fredericks has a problem with traffic lights in Toowoomba, he should look carefully at Singapore traffic lights.

Big Brother watches your every step in Singapore, especially if you said you would shoot a drug dealer in your own home.

And the consequence if he did murder someone? An appointment with a hangman. So please don't do it in Singapore, Dave - otherwise the bleeding hearts here would be praying for you on death row. Sad but true.

JOHN FRIEND, Toowoomba
