Youngsters aim for a blast with SUNfest skirmish program
KIDS sprinted across the grass fields, hiding behind obstacles seeking out their opposing team to aim and shoot.
Although this sounds scary, youngsters of the Gladstone region had a blast at SUNfest's laser skirmish program yesterday.
The program was held at the Tondoon Botanic Gardens, and had a great attendance.
"Every session has been booked out for laser skirmish, it's really popular," SUNfest co-ordinator Kathy Andrew said.
Wide Bay Laser Skirmish ran the program yesterday, which was a hit with the kids.
"This is the second year we have done SUNfest," company owner Phillip Kay said.
"We always get such a positive vibe; we have never had a naughty kid."
Four teams were made. Two teams at a time ran out onto the field and versed each other, aiming for the opposing team's head bands. Each round lasted about 10 minutes.
Players receive immediate feedback about their hits and kills and the guns show individual stats at the end of the game.
"The best thing would have to be the smiles on the kids' faces. This morning a few kids actually came up to us to shake our hand and said 'thank you for having us, we've had a great day'," Mr Kay said.
Wide Bay Laser Skirmish takes its games seriously.
"Our equipment is totally unique and Australian made, which is exported around the world."
The infrared combat is top of the range, and they're making their mark on the laser skirmish scene nationally too.
"Our team competed in nationals last year, and we came sixth," he said.
"This year it's being held in Geelong, and next year it's our turn to host nationals."
The company has been offering its equipment and services for four years now, and is certain its games are fun, safe and fair.
SUNfest has more great activities planned for the rest of the school holidays.
If you haven't yet purchased your SUNfest tickets, some activities still have spaces left; see online for more information gec.glad stonerc.qld.gov.au.
