Young Volvo star scoops coveted apprentice prize

YOUNG gun apprentice Evan Jones may not have had a speech prepared for the biggest night of his heavy vehicle career so far, but his boss Peter Dodge wasn't so bashful.

"He has been one of the finest apprentices that we've had in our employ,” the proud workshop manager at Volvo Commercial Vehicles Brisbane North told the Heavy Vehicle Industry Australia's gala awards dinner in Brisbane.

"He definitely deserves not only the accolades he gets from Volvo but those he gets from the industry.”

Although a quiet achiever at first, Dodge says his protégé has definitely come out of his shell in recent years.

Now Jones has signed off as a qualified technician, Dodge tips his career to go from strength to strength.

"He's expressed he wants to be part of our master tech program that we have within the Volvo group,” Dodge told Big Rigs on Friday night.

"He's also showing great aspirations to be a team leader within the group as well.”

Jones also picked up $2200 worth of prizes from major sponsor Warby Tools; a $700 tool box for winning the eastern region competition, and another $1500 worth of gear for edging out 11 others in the national showdown.

The breadth and diversity of talent in Australia's heavy vehicle industry was acknowledged at the awards.

HVIA Chief Executive Todd Hacking said nominations had highlighted the capacity of the industry from its newest entrants to stalwarts at the other end of their careers.

"You can't help but be optimistic about the future of our industry when you see and feel the passion that was in the room tonight,” Hacking said.

"We were thrilled with the quality and the quantity of the nominations from all parts of Australia.

"Congratulations to both the regional and national award winners, and thank you to those people that took the time to prepare such impressive testimonials.

"And also to our event and award sponsors, particularly National Transport Insurance and Truck Assist, Warby Tools and Moreton Hire.
