Young guns driving Cats ahead

Aussie Rules: As the Gympie Cats have their first home game of the season at the weekend, it will be another challenge for the Cats squad.

Having lost four players to injuries in their first game of the season, Cats coach/co-captain Courtney Findlay said he would not take risks with the players against Bay Power.

"There will be fitness tests done tomorrow and we will see when they come back,” he said.

"We have kept training pretty light but will ramp things up towards the back end of the week.”

Findlay said his side would not be underestimating the opposition.

"Their forwards are going quite well and we will need to be on top of our game,” he said.

"We want to kick-off out first home game with a win but we will not be taking things lightly.”

Cats forward Adam Hendry started the 2018 season with five goals in his first game but he is aiming to keep his place within the squad.

"As long as I am contributing and holding my place in the side is my aim,” Hendry said.

"We have a lot of young forwards within the side and hopefully I can help the team and teach the younger guys.

"All these young blokes like Henry Hamilton and Troy Cunningham are learning the game. It is good for older blokes like me as these young guys are driving me and giving me inspiration.”

As the game nears, Findlay said his side would need to stick to the structures.

"We will need to stick to our game plan and work together as a team, look after each other and hopefully come together on game day,” he said.

Cats v Bay Power this Saturday at Six Mile Ovals at 3pm.
