Young athlete makes history by earning state selection
MACKENZIE Grundy is creating history for South Burnett athletes.
She will become the first from the region to represent Queensland at the Little Athletics National Championships when she competes in Tasmania on April 27 and 28.
"It is exciting and it is cool that no one else has done it,” Mackenzie said.
The Nanango Little Athletics team is full of pride for Mackenzie who was one of 40 under-13 athletes to be selected.
She will race her favourite events, the 800m and 1500m, and is looking forward to seeing what she can achieve.
"I just want to run a good race and a good time makes me happy, it doesn't really matter where I come,” she said.
Winning two silver medals at the Queensland Athletics State Championships earned the Year 8 Kingaroy State High School student the maroon tracksuit, and consistency was key to her selection.
Mackenzie has been training hard throughout the season and the aspiring triathlete's combination of swimming, running and riding training has been key.
"I like to challenge myself and I find it fun,” she said.
Mackenzie's mum, Susan, took the phone call to hear of her daughter's selection and said she was looking forward to her embracing the opportunity.
"It was a bit unexpected but she is very determined and once she got a place in the 1500m she came out in the 800m and there was no stopping her,” she said.
"I love to see her race and I am looking forward going to Tasmania.”
A Queensland team camp in Brisbane made gave Mackenzie and her teammates the chance to practise the Queensland war cry so they are ready to take on Australia's best up-and-coming athletes.
