SHY children come to life with a sketching pencil or paint brush in their hand, Warwick Art Gallery director Karina Devine has seen it first hand.

That's why the gallery will be holding an open studio each Wednesday afternoon to bring artistic children out of the woodwork and cultivate their talent.

The first session was held on Wednesday with 13 children, with classes set to run each afternoon for the rest of the term.

Ms Devine said there were vacancies in the sessions and encouraged children aged six-13 to give it a go.

"It's their little bit of time out and it calms the mind,” she said.

"If you want to say something about the world, you can do it (through art).”

Ms Devine said the gallery team and volunteers were eager to share their skills.

"We recognise how our pathway was made easier because our love for art was recognised and encouraged, it's giving that back,” she said.

The children can either work on a set project or make up their own.

Each session costs $2 and runs from 3.15-4.15pm with all materials supplied.
