You, me and now the world

YOU and Me follows the true story of David “Barney” Miller, an active, life loving guy who had an emerging professional surfing career cut short 17 years ago when he was left quadriplegic following a tragic road accident.

Told by doctors he wouldn’t breathe independently or use his right arm or legs again, Miller’s story traces his unbreakable bond with soul-mate Kate Southwell, who helped him beat impossible odds.

It all started when Miller, drinking heavily after the reality of his situation had set in and Southwell, a troubled girl trying to start a new life, had a chance meeting.

“We were both in a dark place, but we saved each other and have grown together as people,” Southwell said of the pair’s journey

“I never realised how much Barney’s journey was going to help me grow as a person and it’s been incredible.”

Miller made it his mission to not only ask Southwell to marry him, but kneel to propose, stand at the altar and dance at their wedding.

Through the bond, his determination and help of best mate Mick Fanning, Miller defies all belief in moments that must be seen to be believed.

Miller said Southwell was his rock and felt an instant connection to the girl who would change his life and set him on the right track.

The story is brought alive through 50 interviews and 500 hours of footage shot across two continents over four and-a-half years.

The film premieres on the Gold Coast on April 29, featuring a Q and A session with Fanning, who Miller credits as the most “genuine person” he’s met.

“Mick’s been everything: a good friend, a teacher and a good role model,” Miller said.

“”He’ll be at the premiere as well as other surfers and friends.”

Miller said the pair hoped the film would inspire audiences and make them feel good.

“The journey we’ve been on has been so fun and rewarding and we can’t wait to share it with the world,” he said.
