Yamba trainer reveals amazing plan for charity

REALITY TV show The Amazing Race has raked in awards, is feverishly watched by devoted viewers and many countries have created their own spin-offs.

Although the multi-million dollar franchise is unlikely to come to Yamba, Yamba 24/7 Health and Fitness trainer Melanie Fahey has adopted the concept for a charity event.

Mrs Fahey said she wanted to provide an event that was more engaging than raffle tickets or a donation bin.

"I wanted to do something fun for the community," she said.

"I was on my honeymoon and an ad for The Amazing Race flashed across the screen and thought it would be a great thing to do."

In the inaugural Yamba Amazing Race, 12 teams of two people will battle it out for top honours and the $200 first prize.

The teams will have two weeks prior to the February 21 event to fundraise with the top three teams earning a time handicap.

On race day, each team will receive a route card with clues they will have to decipher in order to reach each of the 12 destinations.

The card will also specify what mode of transport the teams can access; walk, cycle or drive.

The teams will also face four challenges, including one overseen by the Yamba Yabbies touch team and another by the U16-18 Yamba Trawlers basketball team. The remaining two are mystery challenges.

Mrs Fahey said five teams had already signed up for the event.

"We are hoping to raise over $1500 through the event," Mrs Fahey said.

"About 70 people will be involved in the event. More than 20 people in the volunteer crew, who will be going around distributing water and making sure contestants are okay."

Participants must be over 18. Registration is $10 per person. For details phone 0414 088 810.
