Workplace cultural diversity
AS GLADSTONE businesses continue to source skilled workers from overseas, the cultural diversity within a single workplace is broadening significantly.
While local small businesses have reported pleasing results with the diverse range of cultures and nationalities working within their teams there have been areas identified in need of further support.
Areas identified in need of attention include support for Australians to have an understanding of the various cultures they are working with and support for newly arrived workers to understand Gladstone and Australian culture.
Other issues arising including addressing the language barrier, sharing a common set of values and beliefs for a workplace and ensuring staff interact with one another.
Welcoming Intercultural Network (WIN) co-ordinator Natalia Muszkat said WIN is constantly reviewing ways to support the integration and settlement of new overseas workers into our community making it a model 'globalised village'.
"It's important that we ensure that new skilled workers fit into the Australian way of doing business and Australian society, while bringing and sharing their own unique culture," Ms Muszkat said.
WIN in conjunction with Amarna Pty Ltd have developed a range of Cultural Diversity Induction and Training Packages commercially available to businesses and organisations in Gladstone which includes a one day workshop reviewing the cultural competency of an organisation.
