Workers unite for Labour Day

A MINI convoy of trucks took part in the annual Labour Day street march along the Townsville Strand on May 7 highlighting safe rates and other concerns to the industry.

Attended by hundreds, the march began at Anzac Park about 10.30am and went to Strand Park 2km away where a family day was held.

Members of the Transport Workers Union were out in force and a Kenworths covered in banners was photographed along the route. There was also an Iveco which represented the Maritime Union of Australia.

At the family day scores of off duty truckies enjoyed camaraderie with members of other unions. They spoke of the importance of the safe rates campaign which is an initiative of the Transport Workers Union.

The message of the campaign is that drivers need safe rates so that they can make a fair and decent wage to support their families and to ensure safer roads for all road users.
