IGA employees given new hope

DEBBIE McDonald went to work at the soon-to-be-closed Clifford Gardens Cornett's IGA yesterday with renewed hope for her future job prospects thanks to a lifeline from a competing supermarket.

Mrs McDonald was one of 47 Cornett's IGA staff members who unsuccessfully applied for jobs with Coles which has purchased the Clifford Gardens store with plans to reopen in late May.

The Chronicle published a story on Tuesday detailing the anger and fear she and fellow staff members including Christine Kose felt after being rejected by Coles.

However, management at Clifford Gardens Woolworths supermarket were quick to act after reading about the plight of the workers and encouraged them to apply for jobs.

"There was a notice put up in the staffroom," Mrs McDonald said.

"Woolies are prepared to take all names and resumes and they will try to put on as many as they can."

She said other stores in the centre had also encouraged people to apply at their businesses.

"It was really nice to think that some of the businesses in the centre cared about what had happened to us."

Woolworths Clifford Gardens store manager Brad Wheeler said 30 IGA staff had applied to Woolworths since Tuesday.

"It's been a surprise to us," Mr Wheeler said.

He said the company would look at the applications and the availability of applicants to work.

"Hopefully, we can put some people on."
