Wood St comes alive with rockabilly vibes
WOOD St came alive on Saturday, with dozens turning up for the inaugural Rockabilly Blues and Beers at The Dispensary.
Owner Adrian Connors said the event was a good alternative to the regular weekend happenings in the city centre.
"It's a family friendly event, and also ... to make sure there was something going on on the weekend in the city centre,” he said.
"There's been a nice little crowd, so obviously something to grow on.”
Ash Vaugh, of Betty Rage Cosmetics, said the event was a fun and unique way of celebrating Fathers Day early.
She said the rockabilly sub-culture community had grown extensively in the seven years she'd been a part of it.
"I think it's empowering fashion, it's a style designed to make any body shape beautiful,” she said.
Calvin Poole's Kombi Kegs business, where beer is dispensed from a refurbished Volkswagen Kombi, has been going from strength to strength since it opened at the start of the year.
Mr Poole said he hopes to eventually have a Kombi in both Mackay and Airlie Beach.
The event comes as the team behind The Dispensary last week announced a new direction for their three Wood St businesses.
Mr Connors said the renovations to former restaurant Burp.eat.drink would cater to the modern Australian market which tends to dine out more often.
"It came at the perfect time to align them all with The Dispensary, all with the one name and to be a more family-friendly venue,” he said.
The entire renovated Dispensary Coffee, Kitchen Bar will open on September 11.
