Wonderland festival fun
PSYCHEDELIC mushrooms and bunnies will invade the laneways of Mackay, as the city turns into a wonderland.
The strange sights will appear randomly on alley walls, in preparation for The Lanes - Mackay's Easter Festival 2013. This year's theme is Alice in Wonderland.
The public is welcome to join in the artwork, by picking up a spray can at special sessions held on Thursday afternoons.
Co-ordinator of the alleyway artwork Autumn Skulthorpe is excited about the surprises that might appear in the upcoming weeks.
"That's the thing about street art - it's full of surprises," she said.
"You never know what to expect."
About 15 local artists will hit the streets and paint their interpretation of Alice in Wonderland.
Ms Skulthorpe said the wacky storyline had many creative possibilities.
"I have been working on a gypsy version of the large Alice," Ms Skulthorpe said.
"We have some tattoo artists taking part, which is exciting."
You can add your bit to Wonderland on Thursdays 3-5pm in 5th Alley, between Wood and Gregory Sts.
"It's near the Rabbit Hole night club," Ms Skulthorpe.
"There will be artists on hand with stencils or you can do it freehand."
The artworks will remain on the walls until the business owners no longer want them.
"If they're good, maybe they will stay," Ms Skulthorpe said.
The Lanes - Mackay's Easter Festival 2013 will be held on March 31.
In its second year, the festival has been devised to re-energise Mackay's City Centre.
The Easter event will be held in four different venues.
These will range from family activities in the morning to 18+ licensed venues in the evening.
The festival will include laneway art, DJs and live music from 3pm until midnight.
