OPINION: Women’s issues in spotlight at ALP conference
GYMPIE'S Laura Manton put women's issues in the national spotlight at the weekend when she addressed the Australian Labor Party National Conference.
The former St Patrick's College student spoke to the convention about the 1995 Beijing Declaration which aims to foster gender equality.
It's great to see such a young woman from the Gympie region talking with such confidence in front of Labor's political heavyweights.
The 21-year-old now lives and works in Brisbane but all of Gympie can be proud of her achievement.
If women are to get "real" gender equality, in all parts of life, it will take the hard work and passion from the likes of Laura in the political sphere.
We need more young women pushing for change in all levels of Australian government.
