Women open up about sex

IT'S the taboo topic which is on every woman's lips.

Many Rockhampton ladies are seeking help from Bek McKenzie and Allie Morris to bring the pages of popular erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey to life.

The managers of Purely Venus, described as a "sensual boutique, purely for women", said since the book's release more women were opening up about their sex lives.

And not only has the East St mall store sold out of the books, but they are rapidly selling many of the "love toys" used by main characters Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey as women attempt to simulate their relationship.

"They are not sex toys, we call them love toys or personal massagers," Bek said.

She said Luna beads, similar to those used by Ana, had doubled in sales; while the supplier of the beads had seen an increase of 400%.

Silky sashes for blindfolds and restraints, along with edible massage oils and ice massagers had also proven popular.

But Bek said it was not specifically the sexual aspect of the novel that women craved.

"Women are wanting a romance, they want to connect," Bek said.

"Our sensuality is such an important part of our lives."

Bek said the novel was not very realistic, particularly in its depiction of Luna beads.

But she was quick to praise the communication barriers it was breaking down.

Bek said the shop hosted hens' and girls' nights, regularly offering women the opportunity to have fun and discuss their sex lives.

She said the store had something for every woman, from pregnant mothers to mastectomy care and most everything else.
