A WOMAN has taken the old proverb 'birds of a feather flock together' a little too far when she disregarded warnings and tried to travel with her emotional support animal: a peacock.

Travellers at New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport were stunned when the woman tried to board her United Airlines flight accompanied by her adult peacock.

According to reports, the woman bought a ticket for herself and then a second for the emotional support animal - a companion animal that that provides benefits for an individual that suffers from a physical or emotional disability.

However, staff refused to let her board.

United Airlines said in a statement the woman, before arriving at the airport, was told several times that her peacock "did not meet guidelines".

But the warnings failed to deter the woman who created a stir amongst her fellow travellers.

"I'm not kidding this woman is wrangling her peacock into the airport," Sherri Ross said in a video posted to Twitter.

"That just happened."
