Winning mixture of cars and fruit
THERE is so many things you can do with a pineapple from fruit salad to health benefits, apparently pineapple and spoon races and throwing a pineapple can be added to the list too.
The Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club is again hosting its annual Australia Day Show 'n' Shine in conjunction with the Pineapple Festival.
There will be many things pineapple themed including the old-fashioned games of hammer throwing and egg and spoon races that have been converted to add pineapples in.
This is the main annual fundraiser for the club which has more than 1200 playing members.
Committee member Leisa Thistlethwaite said it was a well-used facility in the community.
"It has been the sports grounds for about 60 years. But back in history it has been a sports field for more than 100 years as it was a horse race track.”
Touch football, darts, netball, cricket, soccer and many sports events make up the yearly program at the grounds.
Ms Thistlethwaite said the money raised will go towards the maintenance of the fields.
"We have great fields, and the money will be used to maintain them and to help to keep the doors open,” she said.
The event has been growing each year with Ms Thistlethwaite saying more than 200 cars expected as well as motorbikes.
"It is getting bigger and bigger every year. The dyno machine attracts a lot of people.”
There will be a pineapple shaped jumping castle, stalls, prizes, raffles and rides and prizes to be won including in the pie eating competition.
The event will begin at 8am at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club, Steve Irwin Way, with a gold coin entry and $10 per car, for info call 54930055.
