Win for Tomic in Brisbane

GOLD Coast teenager Bernard Tomic has his first taste of victory at the Brisbane International, advancing past Julien Benneteau 6-2 4-6 7-5 on Monday.

The rising star of Australian tennis had found little joy at his home event, failing to win a single set in his last three outings at Tennyson.

But on Monday the Wimbledon quarter-finalist broke the jinx against the French world No. 52 on Pat Rafter Arena.

Fernando Verdasco, Alexandr Dolgopolov and Florian Mayer have all ousted the world No. 42 at the first opportunity over the previous three years.

But if he was fated to stumble again today, he seemed unaware of it as he flew out of the gates in the first tournament of a season holding so much hope for Tomic.
