Why is it so costly to fix Australia's roads?

BIG Rigs social media follower Patricia Hand wants to know why it costs so much to build a road.

Her question came after the Western Roads Federation said funding from the Australian Government to fix the Tanami Rd wasn't enough.

"I believe there needs to be a royal commission into health and safety laws for construction,” she said.

"Each contractor on the job has to exercise the same rules, therefore everybody spends money doing the exact same thing over and over. Does it save lives? No.”

Russ Cook said the "mega money” was spent on Brisbane's share of the Bruce Highway. "It starts at Brisbane and finishes at Gympie, that's where the bulk of funds go. The true 'Bruce' is patch, patch, patch. Even the odd spot rebuild is cheaply done, those sections start to break up within two years.”
