Why aren't they making it a trade?
THE solution to the trucking industry's skill shortage is "so obvious”, according to truckie Noel Aird.
"Make MC driver's licence a trade,” he said.
"But the government won't do it and big companies don't want it because they'll have to pay decent wages.
"No young people want to do a job that wages are so low and you get no recognition for hard work.
"Also trip rate needs to stop, drivers need to be paid by the hour just like any other trade.
"This will help slow drivers down and encourage safer practice.”
Noel's comments came after driver John Eason told Big Rigs that after a slew of job application rejections, he was wondering whether he'll ever get his big break in the industry.
"I've been around trucks all my life - you'd think the big companies would give you a go,” he said.
