Why are we missing out on recycling talks?

NANANGO member Deb Frecklington says it is unacceptable the South Burnett was overlooked to host an information forum in preparation for the rollout of the Container Refund Scheme.

Ms Frecklington said the entire region was forgotten when it came to the introduction of the scheme, with the closest forums for residents held in Dalby and Gympie.

"Yet, again, regional areas like ours are being forgotten and this is a perfect example,” she said.

The Container Refund Scheme should be an important opportunity for community groups and P&Cs and other not-for profits to help their fundraise or establish social enterprises.

"How can they be involved when in most cases, they won't be able to make it to one of the forums,” Ms Frecklington said.

It was unacceptable people from the South Burnett were expected to travel long distances to access State Government information sessions, she said.

The forums will also be held late in the implementation process of the Scheme, giving community groups information months late.

"It gives groups little time to decide if they wish to be involved, and almost no time to plan for the start of the Scheme on November 1,” Ms Frecklington said.

"I'm calling on the State Government and the Minister for Environment, Leanne Enoch, to schedule a forum for the South Burnett and give our region a chance to be involved in this important recycling initiative.”
