When prices drop, thieves shop

THEY didn't stoop to the retail frenzy and surging crushes seen at DJ's and Myer in Sydney but Coffs Coast shoppers made a beeline for the area's major shopping precincts and department stores to take advantage of the traditional Boxing Day sales.

At Park Beach Plaza, Centro Toormina and other precincts the scenes were similar - steady flows of customers keen to find plenty of bargains.

But the day came with a warning from senior police who wanted shoppers to be extra vigilant about their personal security as well as the possibility of theft and fraud.

"In the hustle and bustle of the post-Christmas sales it's very easy for people to let their guard down and become vulnerable to crime," said Detective Superintendent Helen Begg.

"If you're heading to the sales it's important you remain alert to what's going on around you - particularly to anyone who might be acting suspiciously.

"By taking a few simple precautions you can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to crimes including bag snatches or credit card skimming."
