What's Alan's major dislike?

AGED 63, Alan Wilkes drives a 2003 Western Star for Melcrest Auto Express out of Brisbane and gets around the country.

Big Rigs saw Alan near his truck along busy Bowen Road in Townsville early on August 12 waiting to unload the last car he had transported up from the state capital.

"This is the oldest truck in the company fleet but is great for the job. It is powered by a Detroit 500hp motor and has an 18 speed gearbox,” he said.

A driver for the past 39 years, Alan has fond memories of his first truck - a Leyland Chieftain.

Alan said more rest areas are required for truckies which have toilets and he rates the Moree to Coonabarabran road in NSW as the most challenging to travel on.

A major dislike for Alan are van drivers who "speed up on overtaking lanes”.

"I travel to Adelaide often and see a lot of that over there,” he said.

But Alan did have some nice comments about van drivers especially in western Queensland.

"Most do the right thing out that way but when you hit the Bruce Highway it is different,” he said.

Alan barracks for the Brisbane Broncos in the NRL and was glowing in his praise for his boss Murray.

"He treats us drivers with respect and the trucks are well maintained,” he said.

I asked Alan what he enjoys outside work and his answer was swift.

"Having a few cold beers at home and relaxing,” he said.
