We're over-governed: CEO

THE horizon is full of travel plans for outgoing Gladstone Regional Council chief executive officer Graeme Kanofski, but after 36 years in the local government industry, he’s leaving some thoughts for future roads.

Mr Kanofski, whose long career comes to an end today, gave a presentation at the Local Government Managers Australia in October, titled “Looking forward, looking back – a local government reflection”.

In the speech, he put forward a concept for a reformed political/government system for Australia, which he claims is currently over-governed.

“Imagine the electoral interest in a two-tier federal/regional structure promoted under the banner of ‘we will abolish property taxes (general taxes) under this model’.”

Mr Kanofski’s proposal includes electronic voting and regional government providing the membership of the Federal Government to ensure collaboration between the two levels.

In a nutshell, Mr Kanofski explained the obsession with processes by governments was the reason why he no longer had job satisfaction.

He told The Observer local government stood out as a career because of the opportunities and abilities to change the community for the better, which was why he loved it for so long.
