Modern Family has cornered that market with invincible flair for years.

It's about to get some competition in the form of new US sitcom The Goldbergs, premiering on Seven next Wednesday at 8.45pm.

Alf, cassette tapes, floppy discs, Fine Young Cannibals, high-waisted stonewashed denim, big hair and a whole lot of fake jewels bedazzling tracksuit jackets.

That's right, it's the 80s and they're described as a golden era in the hilarious YouTube trailer. I'm not sure I'd go that far, but The Goldbergs look funny.

Mom Beverley is played by Wendi McLendon-Covey, who was part of the hysterical Bridesmaids cast.

Older brother Barry is played by Troy Gentile, although I swear it's Albert Brooks somehow 16 again. There seem to be moments of genuine warmth in amongst the slapstick and head-shaking about how quaint the 80s were in comparison to today.

Having grown up in this era, I'll be tuning in for my fix of nostalgia. Rose-coloured glasses? Mandatory. Homage to a simpler time? Certainly.

I'll be raising my can of Tab in retro-revival solidarity Wednesday night.

And the good news for Aussie watchers is a second season has already received the green light (the first season finished up in the US earlier this month).
