We need to be treated better

A LETTER from a truckie asking if drivers were just a "disposable commodity” struck a chord with our readers.

The letter was written after the Queensland Transport Minister called an emergency meeting after six workers were killed in mining accidents in the past year.

Drivers of the Big Rigs community unanimously agreed something needed to change.

Rob Pfingst said every accident, even the ones you caused, should be investigated by OH&S.

"It's not a traffic accident, it's a workplace accident. The roads are our workplace. Too hard big problem, they'd have to induct every driver to the roads,” he said.

Steve McDermott said trouble was that the "uneducated public” was able to enter and create "hazardous situations in the truckies' workplace”.

"Some of which have fatal consequences. In any other industry this would be unacceptable.”
