Watch the scales as winter weather bites

AS THE numbers dip on the thermometer, the numbers can start to rise on the scales.

But the start of winter doesn't have to schedule a kilogram creep, says a personal trainer.

Bootcamp Toowoomba's Lisa Seydel said that while winter presented a challenge in keeping fit, there were ways to stay motivated.

Her number one tip is to not go it alone.

"Find a small group of friends who are like-minded, who need the motivation as well so that you can keep yourself accountable as you go through the cooler months," Mrs Seydel said.

"Find somewhere where you can work indoors, when it is foggy, when it is wet and we have frost.

"Try to find about three mornings a week or three times a week where you can to exercise and try to stick to those days."

Heavy winter meals tend to be another source of the winter weight gain, said Mrs Seydel.

"They tend to eat a lot more, because it's colder and you just want to eat more.

"Then your metabolism, because you're not exercising as much as well, tends to slow down, so you're not actually burning off the calories."
