Warwick's woodcrafters look ahead for 2018
A CHILLY, rainy Warwick morning did nothing to deter a large group of like-minded men and women gathering to look ahead at what's in store for 2018.
At a large shed on Glen Rd, the Warwick Shire Woodcrafters Inc meet twice-weekly for a chinwag and sharing of knowledge and skills.
President John Madsen said the group was made up of mostly retired people with a common interest in woodcrafting.
"WE currently have around 30 members, but we're open to all comers,” he said.
"Especially women and young people with an interest in woodcrafting.”
Membership for a year is $50 with a $10 joining fee and this entitles members to use all the tools and machines owned by the club.
"If we don't have it, you probably don't need it,” Mr Madsen said.
"Every now and then we'll have a group member or an outside specialist run a course as well, which are always popular.
"And in the past we've been able to rely on RADF grants to fund those.”
As well as working on their own projects, the group is commissioned to do all sorts of jobs locally, from small repair jobs, to restorations and original pieces.
One commissioned work in the pipeline is a large honour board for the Warwick Bridge Club.
They have also been asked to build a glass case to house some Australian Federal Police memorabilia in the council chambers.
Woodcrafter Ian Woods said he had been been of the team that was asked to assist with restoration works at Glengallan Homestead.
"The board approached us to assist their work and we turned out a few pieces that take pride of place in the homestead today,” he said.
"Including a love-seat and an overmantle in the main drawing room.
"These were built based on original photographs supplied by the board.”
The group has also crafted three bench seats for the Southern owns Regional Council, one sits in the library, another in council offices and the other in the Warwick Town Hall.
Mr Madsen said most of the group's work came by referral.
"Most people know we're here and what we do and if they need something done they prefer to have it done locally,” he said.
"The great part about that it, that we're mostly working away on our own projects until something comes in that we can tackle.
"That could come at anytime from anywhere.”
