Voters mixed on handling of Indonesia relationship

ALMOST half of Australian voters polled about the nation's relationship with Indonesia believe the Abbott Government is mishandling the relationship.

The Essential Media poll of more than 1700 people showed 42% of voters believed the Federal Government's handling of the relationship was "poor".

While most of those voters were supporters of Labor or the Greens, 12% of Coalition voters supported the statement.

However, 58% of those surveyed believed the government was performing well in the relationship.

The poll comes amid reports the nation's aid budget will be cut by up to $1 billion in next week's Federal Budget, with some of that to come from aid to Indonesia.

While details were scarce on Wednesday, the cut, reported by Fairfax, would come on top of the $5 billion-plus culled last year from Australia's overall aid budget.
