Volunteers give lake a clean-up

THE 2017 Currimundi Lake Community Clean-Up attracted 107 volunteers removing a staggering 647kg of debris from the lake and the surrounding bushland.

The rain cleared for the event and provided the eager community members perfect conditions to go paddling, walking or boating to remove all the debris and ultimately look after our lake and its inhabitants.

The event was the first time all of the local community groups have come together for the mutual cause of looking after Currimundi Lake.

Amongst the items removed were couches, chairs, fishing gear and thousands of pieces of small plastics.

"It's so great to see the community joining the nine wonderful community groups that regularly clean up around the lake and surrounding areas,” event organiser Ian Thomson said.

"The most enjoyable part was seeing so many young people involved.”

All of the debris was sorted by Tangaroa Blue and Envirocom with the data being added to the Australian Marine Debris Initiative Database so we can find source reduction schemes for the future.

Community groups involved were Ocean Crusaders, Currimundi Catchment Care Group, Friends of Currimundi, Night Eyes, Envirocom, Tangaroa Blue, TAPP, Sunshine Coast Turtle Care Group and Surfrider Foundation.

All of the groups had displays to let people know what they do and most will have new volunteers when other events come up in the future.

The event will now become an annual event as part of National Water Week in October each year.
