Mackay mourns voice of the airwaves

THE 60-year-old man killed when a truck struck his wheelchair in the CBD was Mackay radio presenter Geoff Black.

Mr Black presented the Workday Starter show from 9am-11am weekdays on Mackay country radio station My105.9FM.

His colleagues were too distraught to comment yesterday.

Shortly after 11am on Wednesday, Mr Black's wheelchair was struck by a Mackay Regional Council-contracted truck at the intersection of Gordon and Macalister Sts. He was taken to Mackay Base Hospital but died about 3pm.

Mr Black was well-known to Mackay's community radio workers and listeners, where he was known for his friendly and upbeat nature.

He also presented the Geoff's Country radio program from 4pm-6pm on Saturdays.

Formerly a presenter at community radio station 4CRM, Mr Black was forced to relinquish his role when he was confined to a wheelchair.

He began working at country music station My105.9FM in North Mackay.

A 59-year old-woman struck on Shakespeare St on Tuesday remains in a critical condition in Mackay Base Hospital.
