Viral Toowoomba busker playing with Thirsty Merc

TOOWOOMBA busker and viral sensation Dylan Crowe has been given a huge leg-up in his aspiring music career, winning the chance to open for legendary rockers Thirsty Merc this month.

Mr Crowe, who shot to local fame when a video of him performing on street swept around Facebook and was viewed thousands of times, was ecstatic with the news that he would open for the band at the Highfields Tavern on May 10.

He thanked Highfields residents for their support, saying his popularity in the area helped get him on the bill.

"I'm really stoked - it really is awesome because I wouldn't have gotten the opportunity if it wasn't for the fact that the Highfields community had gotten behind me," he said.

"I'm really excited, starting to get a bit nervous. I get 25 minutes to play original songs."

Mr Crowe has some history with Thirsty Merc, after being given the chance to write a song with singer Ray Thistlewaite in 2011 as part of a school songwriting competition.

A 16-second video by a passerby of Mr Crowe outside the front of the Woolworths in Highfields in February was enough to kick-start his music career.

"At the start of the year, I said I wanted to make it my year but I didn't expect this," he said.

"I'm really happy - this next year is going to be really fun. The gig requests keep coming in.

"The point of all this is to transition over to the stage act."

Thirsty Merc will perform at the Highfields Tavern, supported by Dylan Crowe, on May 10. Tickets are available at Oztix.
