University forum highlights indigenous women for reconciliation week

GENDER is in the spotlight again this June at the University of the Sunshine Coast as academics and activists alike converge to discuss indigenous women and their achievements.

Gender specialist Tami Harriot will be moderating the panel discussion on June 1, when indigenous women from Australia and Papua New Guinea will explore what possibilities lie ahead of indigenous women in the spirit of National Reconciliation Week.

"What I'm hoping for is a better opportunity for the conversation about how to improve things for these women,” she said.

"At the end of the day, we're all human (but) we need to start hearing from different perspectives.

"Maybe this (conversation) will force us all to take down those barriers holding some of us back.”

The panel discussion will be held in the university's Buranga Centre from 2pm on June 1. Morning tea is also offered from 9.30am at the same location.
