Under-14s ready for redemption at finals
RUGBY UNION: The Wheatmen under-14 team has been relentless in harvesting wins in 2019 as they go into the finals undefeated for a second year in a row.
The 2018 grand final title was theirs for the taking, however a slip up in performance at the last game of the year spoiled a flawless season.
Under-14's coach Scott Cosgrove told the Dalby Herald last year's final result was the wake-up call the boys needed.
"It's a good little reminder to the boys that things don't always work out as planned,” Cosgrove said.
"You can't assume anything and you've still got to show up and try your best.”
The young Wheatmen have dominated paddocks across the southwest in 2019, regularly winning by a margin of 50 points.
Last week the team thrashed second-place Toowoomba Bears 69-10.
The U14s picked up a few players since last year's grand final and lost a few but overall it's a strong team which includes four Queensland Country players and about six Darling Downs representatives.
"It's a talented team, as a coach I don't really have to do much to be honest,” Cosgrove said.
"When you've got individuals who are such stand-outs in the competition and pretty much all of them together in the one team - it's easy for things to happen.”
Cosgrove described the standard of players on the U14 Wheatmen team was "well above average”.
"I'd be amazed if one or two of these guys don't play professional football.
"Some of them are that talented, when they've played for Queensland already at this age, it's really only their attitude that stops them from going on as long as their health stays well.
"It's great they are continuing to play and sticking to the club.”
The U14s are feeling confident about taking on the fourth-placed side in the semi-final on Friday night.
From there, they hope to have a full team training session before the grand final, the first of the season due to some players being at boarding schools in Toowoomba.
A club presentation night last week rewarded the best- performing players of the season.
Souths Kookaburras had the last laugh in the U13s, taking down the Wheatmen 50-7.
The U15s secured a nail- biting win against the Bears 26-20 and the U17s got a rest week ahead of the semi finals as Bears forfeited the game.
All four Dalby Wheatmen teenage teams will contest semi-finals at Highfields this weekend.
