Tweed shunned by Commonwealth Games
THE Tweed and southern Gold Coast were shunned by Commonwealth Games bid organisers with plans to host just two sports in the area.
Bid organisers chose Currumbin Valley to host road cycling events, but both track cycling and shooting were heading to Brisbane.
The rugby sevens competition will be held at Robina's Skilled Park.
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh, Gold Coast Mayor Ron Clarke and Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Bid chairman Mark Stockwell announced the venues at a lunch on the Gold Coast yesterday.
Mr Stockwell said one of the venues was a temporary 7500-seat venue that could be moved around the region during the games.
“It can even be split in two so we can have one in north Gold Coast and one in south Gold Coast,” Mr Stockwell said.
Ms Bligh said that it “wouldn't be going over the border.”
Tweed Heads Bowls Club general manager Ross Bailey said he was disappointed that the club wasn't considered as the lawn bowls venue.
“There was a rumour going around that Broadbeach Bowls Club was the venue,” Mr Bailey said.
“I do think there are a number of clubs in the area that are disappointed,” he said.
“We would have loved to have held the Commonwealth Games here. It's the highest level of competition for bowls.
“A hundred yards across the border and I think we would have had a better chance.”
Mr Bailey said the Tweed Heads club could hold the event right now and didn't require any upgrade.
Mr Stockwell said the decisions were made based on the welfare of athletes.
“We have to focus here on the athletes, how those athletes are going to be treated,” he said.
“We have to talk up how great this is going to be for the athletes”.
