TV tune-up woes will mean better reception
SUNSHINE Coast television viewers were thrown into turmoil by scheduled work to step Australians into a digital-only future - and they aren't happy about it.
The bad news is that more interruptions are expected.
The national Retune program is moving free-to-air television channels to new frequencies, to free up space for new services such as mobile broadband.
Superior Signals' Rod Becher said he has had many calls about this week's phase-in at Noosa, Pomona, Cooroy, Nambour, parts of Maroochydore and Coolum areas.
"There is a little bit of a transition between the old system and the new. It's not just a flick of the switch," he said.
"In the short term, people need to be patient.
"Once all these changes come in, bottom line, I think people will have trouble-free TV if they have a properly installed antenna system.
"Once it's changed over it should be better than ever. Long term, I think people can look forward to better TV."
Signal disruptions were expected to be an outcome of the process, with the government advising residents that they would need to retune their television, set-top box or digital recorder to receive all of the free-to-air digital TV channels.
Mr Becher said he wanted people living in areas south of Maroochydore - such as Buddina, Wurtulla, Caloundra and Little Mountain - to be aware that they would experience the changes on Tuesday, July 22.
He said Sunshine Coast residents were no strangers to reception issues at the best of times, and more might crop up.
He said he had had to help out when some people have had a double-up of channels after retuning, and that old antenna systems could need replacement.
"Our biggest job now is education and helping people understand the phase," he said.
The feedback was not all bad though, as many people on the Daily's Facebook page reported better picture quality soon after the work, while others offered helpful tips on how to re-tune.
