TV towers to get a retune

NEXT week may be a good time for daytime soap opera fans to buy a good book.

Viewers in Gympie may experience outages to all television services during the day between 9.30am and 3.30pm from next Tuesday to Friday.

The outages are so that work can be done on the Gympie Town television tower ahead of the retune, which is a national program that involves more than 1400 television channels changing at more than 400 sites across Australia.

A spokesperson for the Department of Communications said outages generally occur when technicians need to work on television towers to replace or modify equipment to allow for the channel changes.

"Work is done overnight where possible but it is often necessary to work on TV towers during the day for safety reasons," the spokesperson said.

"Usually, outages will be scheduled for the days immediately leading up to a retune, on the retune day, or on the days immediately following a retune.

"However, there are some cases where outages may need to occur well in advance of the scheduled retune date due to the complexity of the work and this is the case for Gympie."

The dates of the retunes for the two towers in Gympie - Gympie and Gympie Town - will be confirmed in the next few months. Around five weeks ahead of the retune days, the department will provide information to local stakeholders confirming the date and the action that viewers will need to take.
