Tony Steers

VETERAN owner-driver Tony Steers had pulled up beside the Bass Highway across from the Detention River Roadhouse when we saw him on January 3.

Aged 58, Tony is based at Elliott and was driving a 2007 MAN truck.

His company is named AR Steers Livestock Transport.

"I am taking cattle to the abattoirs at Smithton and picked them up from a station near home," he said.

Riding in the passenger seat with Tony was 13-year-old Jackson Gillam (pictured) who wants to be either a farmer or a truckie when he gets older.

Tony likes stopping off at the Detention River Roadhouse where he says the workers are friendly. He also stops at the Highclere Roadhouse on the Edgley Highway out from Burnie.

Although Tony loves life in Tasmania he is disappointed about the near demise of the timber industry.
