Truck driver dead after crash at Gundagai

ONE driver has died and two have has escaped injury following a multi-vehicle crash which has blocked northbound lanes of the Hume Highway, south of Gundagai, this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene 3km south of Gundagai about 3.40am and found a southbound B-double had crossed to the wrong side of the highway and crashed down an embankment, partially blocking northbound lanes.

The driver was ejected from the cabin and died at the scene.

A short time later, two B-doubles being driven north came across the crashed heavy vehicle; one was able to avoid the wreckage but the second hit the trailer.

While neither driver was injured, the highway is now blocked northbound.

All vehicles were laden with general freight.

Investigations are being conducted by officers from Riverina Police District.

The Transport Management Centre advises that motorists travelling north are being diverted along the Snowy Mountains Highway to Tumut and then Gocup Road to re-join the Hume Highway.

This diversion is suitable for all vehicles but will add at least 40 minutes to journeys.

There may be short closures of all southbound lanes as the salvage and clean-up continues and investigations into the crash are carried out throughout the day.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time and exercise caution.

Emergency services and traffic crews are on-site.
