IT MAY have been a little slippery on the streets of Grafton this morning after a truck driver forgot to fasten his fuel cap properly.

Grafton Fire and Rescue captain Garry Reardon said they attended a diesel spill on Bent, Fitzroy, Davey, Villiers and Turf streets in Grafton at about 7.30am.

"It's a hazard particularly for cyclists and motor bikes, the spills usually occur on corners, round abouts and things like that," he said.

"We neutralise the spill with something like clean sweep. It's a busy time of day so the traffic is a safety issue for us.

"We appreciate motorists cooperation while we are dealing with these things so we can get out of there to keep the traffic moving."

Mr Reardon said they found a fuel cap off a truck while they were cleaning up.

"Someone has refuelled, and failed to refit the fuel cap property," he said.

"Depending on which side the cap is on, the fuel swashes out of the tank and all over the road when they go around corners."
