Truck and car fire closes outbound lanes on the Monash Freeway

THE Monash Freeway has had a firey start to the week with both a truck and car going up in flames this morning.

Firefighters were called to the outbound truck fire between Princes Highway and Clyde Road just after 5am.

The Berwick blaze, which was billowing black smoke, took six tankers to bring under control.

Traffic has been condensed to the left lane as crews work to clear soil and debris from the area.

A short time later, a car also caught alight outbound near the Heatherton Rd exit in Doveton.

Firefighters managed to contain the fire almost immediately.

Two lanes of traffic continue to flow through the area, while the left lane remains closed.

A VicRoads spokesman said inbound traffic is being affected as commuters slow down to take a look.

Both drivers escaped unharmed and paramedics did not attend.

No significant peak-hour delays are expected as trade workers have a rostered day off.
