Trio set for epic trek in Peru

MOST of us only dream of making a difference. Most of us only dream of adventure.

Three community minded men are turning that dream into a reality and taking part in October's Mototaxi Junket, a perilous two-week journey traversing the Peruvian

landscape on a three-wheeled sofa bike, to raise vital funds and awareness for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA).

Julian Buttigieg , Glen Gorton and Andrew Nolan are already planning for the journey - as much as you can when you have little idea of what to expect. Organised by The Adventurists, The Mototaxi Junket is a charity fundraiser that will see the lads navigate a 3000km length of Peru on a woeful amalgamation of two vehicles, with no route; no support and no clue what to expect. Your chances of being seriously injured or dying as a result of taking part are high, warn The Adventurists.

But so is the opportunity to spread the word of the fantastic Rotary program that allowed the boys to become the motivated, goal setting adults they are today.

The inspiration behind this treacherous journey came from the success of last year's Indian journey in a Rickshaw where they raised more than $11,000 for Dystonia research.

"After smashing last year's goal and settling back into real life after the return from India, we needed something new to strive for," Glen said.

"We found that combining fundraising with an adventure gave us a way to keep the community engaged in something we're passionate about while also keeping them entertained. So, it wasn't hard to decide we'd raise funds and awareness for RYLA this time around."

The RYLA program, largely sponsored by district Rotary clubs, is a seminar local Rotarians have all attended and volunteered for over varying years.

"It's a fantastic program that gives youth, aged 19-29, the tools to develop and challenge themselves personally and professionally," Glen said.

"It changed all of our lives, and we certainly would not be setting these wild goals without having attended

RYLA. We just want to give back to the program that gave us so much."

The boys aim to fund awardees to attend the seminar at a cost of $500 per person, and hoping to get businesses involved by sponsoring one of their own employees to attend the week-long seminar held January 24-30 next year.
