Travel company based on Coast now among global leaders

A NICHE travel company, based on the Sunshine Coast, has been given a leg-up in a partnership with one of Australia'a largest travel groups.

Chimu Adventures, which established an office in Mooloolaba about 10 years ago, has entered into a partnership with Intrepid Group, effective immediately from the contract signing last Friday.

Both companies espouse an expertise-based and environmentally sustainable approach to travel packages, with Chimu Adventures specialising in Antarctic and Latin American travel.

The addition of Chimu Adventure's $30 million business will add heft to Intrepid Group's $300 million, and together the companies will become the largest seller of polar travel in Australia and one of the largest to Antarctica globally.

The first priority for the two independently-owned Australian companies is to launch a range of charter cruises to the Arctic and Antarctica.

Chimu Adventures co-founders Chad Carey and Greg Carter will continue to manage their company, which also has offices in Sydney and the UK.

Mr Carey, who is based at the Mooloolaba office, said the partnership provided an opportunity to grow business with a like-minded company.

"Greg and I are very excited about this new partnership, not just in terms of the synergies and growth potential, but also the prospect of being able to share such a fantastic opportunity with such similarly culturally aligned organisation," Mr Carey said.

The partnership is Intrepid's first investment since its co-founders bought back the company from shareholders in 2015.
