NAIDOC Week celebrations were in full swing this week as the town of Yuleba took its turn to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island culture.

While Roma welcomed NAIDOC last week, on Wednesday, the small community on the Warrego Highway observed an intimate ceremony at Yuleba State School.

In attendance were students from both Yuleba and Wallumbilla state schools, member for Warrego Ann Leahy and Maranoa Regional Council Mayor Tyson Golder, who witnessed a special welcome from indigenous group, the St George Dancers.

Aunty Lynette Nixon also made an appearance, receiving a special commemorative plate for winning the NAIDOC female elder of the year in Sydney for her contributions to the community.

Yuleba State School principal Pharan Akhtarkhavari said NAIDOC Week was a great opportunity for the school to celebrate indigenous culture.

"NAIDOC is an important day that links Australia to its heritage as a nation,” Mr Akhtarkhavari said.

"Honouring the indigenous languages and culture is a way of stepping forward and we were fortunate to have the presence of Aunty Lynette Nixon for such a special day.

"We had the St George Dancers deliver a great introduction, before both schools broke into separate group activities,” he said.

"It was also good to see the participation of the primary students from Wallumbilla.”
