A touch of Hollywood for Maryborough's Brolga Theatre?
MARYBOROUGH movie-goers will be among the first in the country to see Saving Mr Banks, with the city set to host an exclusive early viewing of the Disney film - and we want you to help us get Tom Hanks to come.
Hanks stars in the soon-to-be-released film which tells the story of how Maryborough-born author PL Travers' Mary Poppins character was brought to life.
The Chronicle issued the Hollywood star an invite via Twitter after learning Fraser Coast film fans will be able to see the film on January 3, days before the movie's general release on January 9.
Fraser Coast Mary Poppins-themed characters, music and street theatre performances will provide a magical prelude to the special screening in the city's riverside Brolga Theatre.
Fraser Coast Opportunities worked with Disney to make the screening possible and its general manager David Spear said it was a triumph for the region.
"Disney has recognised the special connection the region has with Mary Poppins and PL Travers and it is a wonderful coup to be able to stage this special movie presentation," Mr Spear said.
He said the partnership would make possible a wider marketing campaign centred on the movie also.
We are inviting the media to share the Queensland connection to this wonderful story during coverage of the Australian release of the movie," he said.
Arrangements will include visits for key media groups to coincide with the local movie launch.
Mr Spear said Maryborough's connection with Mary Poppins was also included in a Fraser Coast tourism brochure distributed to more than 220,000 households in Brisbane and Sunshine Coast area in January.
He said the invite extended to visitors who wanted to "discover where the Mary Poppins magic began and to continue the adventure on the Fraser Coast".
Details of how to get tickets will be released in the next few days.
