Touch footy team makes splash at Sunshine Coast
Touch football: Burnett State College's open mixed touch football team has banked important points for the Queensland All Schools touch football competition in Brisbane in October after a strong performance at the Sunshine Coast All Schools competition.
The team started off the a "coach-frustrating” win 3-2 over Grace Lutheran College Caboolture, according to coach Chris Rodwell.
"Whilst the win was a good result we should have comprehensively beaten Grace, instead of almost losing the game,” he said.
Next up, they gritted out a 3-3 draw against competition heavyweights Redcliffe State High School, a result that would "at the end of the day keep us out of finals,” Mr Rodwell said.
BSC's hopes were then dealt a crippling blow by St Patrick's College Gympie, going down 1-7.
The final game against Bribie State High School was critical, Rodwell said, as it would count towards Queensland All Schools.
"We started off very slowly and after 10 minutes were behind 0-2, before consecutive intercepts to Sophie Zipf put us on the front foot and back in the game,” Rodwell said.
They eventually secured a 4-2 victory.
However, BSC missed out on finals after finishing second in their pool due to goal difference, the heavy defeat to St Patrick's cruelling their chances.
BSC's U15 mixed team, playing in the boys' competition, found the going tough initially, before finishing strong.
They lost 1-8 to Pine Rivers State High, 0-8 to St Columban's College Caboolture, 0-12 to St Patrick's College Gympie, before rallying to a noble 3-6 defeat against Mueller College, "where we showed what our attack can do when our defence works hard to contain teams,” Rodwell said.
"The U15s team tried hard all day and should be proud of their effort throughout the competition,” he said.
"Thank you to all students for their excellent behaviour on the day and their enthusiasm all day to compete against other bigger schools.
"Thank you to Mrs Darlington and Mrs Kenny for their help and support on the day.”
