Saving lives everyday the aim of Fatality Free Friday

TOOWOOMBA parents Ken and Beverley White watched with pride as people filled Village Green for a national road safety event started by their son.

Fatality Free Friday was held throughout the country yesterday, with safety displays at the Toowoomba celebrations complimented with a lunchtime sausage sizzle.

"It's amazing," Mrs White said.

She said her son Russell White had been in a different capital city every day this week in the lead up to yesterday's event.

"It is all about saving lives. That is his passion."

A Kidsafe stall focused on children's safety and the correct fitting of car capsules.

The blindspot for reversing drivers was also highlighted.

Blindspots on some vehicles can be further than 15 metres directly to the rear, adding to the risk of reversing over a small child.

Kidsafe representative Bek Tidyman said Queensland, on average, accounted for half of the country's low-speed runover deaths.

She said there were eight deaths a year, with four of those in Queensland.

Preventing those tragedies was part of her motivation in setting up at the road safety awareness event.

"We are 110 per cent in support of that," Ms Tidyman said.

Department of Transport and Main Roads southern Queensland regional manager for road safety Alan Dixon said the aim was to have no fatalities on Australian roads for one day.

"It is also to show we (road safety stakeholders) work together," Mr Dixon said.
