Tokyo calls for our Bandits star

ANDREW Campbell is one step closer to his dream of playing baseball at the Olympics.

The Ipswich product will represent Team Australia for a third time as a senior player, after learning he will play in Australia's tour of Japan next month.

Campbell was officially named in the 28-man squad by Baseball Australia today.

The heavy-hitting Ipswich Musketeers and Brisbane Bandits centre fielder is no stranger to playing in the green and gold, having done so for numerous junior representative sides and twice as an adult.

But today's announcement was his first "official" selection through the Australian Baseball League, and certainly his most important as preparations commence for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

"I turned 26 (on Sunday) and I still feel like I'm quite young in baseball terms, so 2020 I believe is achievable for me, it's definitely something I want to do," Campbell said of representing Australia at the Tokyo Games.

"I think that's the pinnacle of my career. I can't wait to try and get there."

Team Australia will play the Japanese national team in Nagoya on March 3, and in Osaka on March 4.

The world number one-ranked Samurai are expected to field a full-strength line-up for the friendlies against Team Australia, and general manager Glenn Williams said "it will be another great experience for our team as we work towards Olympic qualification."

Campbell could not hide his excitement.

"I've played against Japanese teams throughout my career but never against their national side, they're like gods in their country," Campbell said.

"I've heard they're pretty crazy about their baseball, so I look forward to seeing how they go about their business."

With the prestigious Premier12 competition in 2019, the Olympics in 2020 and 2021 World Baseball Classic on the horizon, Campbell agreed it was important to foster relationships with strong baseball nations so that Australia remained relevant on the international scene.

"Speaking to (Brisbane Bandits CEO) Mark Reidy, he was saying for the future of baseball in Australia we have to create connections with the Asian market," Campbell said.

"Baseball Australia is really trying to build these relationships, so we can practice at the highest level possible and have success at those big tournaments.

"They're really getting going in the next few years and I'm excited to see what happens."
